Mark Krebs Rugs: Traditional Techniques Meet Contemporary Styling

Montreal-based design studio Mark Krebs taps into old-world techniques to weave rugs for the modern home. Founded in 2019 by designer Davin Cowper, the brand partners with skilled weavers in Northern India to create handmade wool rugs.

From colorful, bold patterns to timeless neutrals, these rugs feature a variety of contemporary designs crafted with expert artisanship. A great level of care and attention goes into creating each piece, ensuring long-lasting durability and beautiful detailing. Learn more about three Mark Krebs collections at Unison with distinctive design features that showcase the brand’s signature handmade quality and precision.

The Rose Garden Collection: Lush Colors

The Mark Krebs Rose Garden Rug draws upon weaving traditions passed down through generations. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Persian nomadic tribes wove flat-weave kilim rugs by hand, creating a smooth, tapestry-like surface. These rugs were woven so tightly that the warp was barely visible. The Rose Garden Rug is handwoven in Northern India using these same techniques. The result is an especially durable rug suited to high-traffic areas.

This rug isn’t just designed for durability, however. The Rose Garden Rug features saturated, rich colors inspired by lush florals. Shades of crimson red, pale pink, grassy green, sky blue, deep black and creamy white intersect in a geometric, color-blocked pattern that serves as a reinterpretation of classic motifs. The lively pattern instantly infuses a space with warmth and vibrancy.

The Stitch Collection: Patchwork Panels

The hand-weaving techniques emphasized by Mark Krebs are perhaps most noticeable in the brand’s Stitch Collection. Available in classic beige (Chalk) and gray (Pebble) colorways, the design includes a unique notched edge. Two-foot-wide panels are laid side by side before being stitched together to create a full-sized piece. The simple, neutral striped pattern helps to highlight the offset placement of the panels while maintaining a clean, minimal appearance.

Despite its avant-garde look, the Stitch Rug is inspired by weaving techniques established long ago. Many nomadic tribes of centuries past would travel by horseback, which required them to use smaller, portable looms only capable of creating narrow strips of fabric. These strips would be crafted over the course of their journeys and joined together into larger rugs later on. Like these traditional kilim rugs, Stitch Rugs have a durable, tight weave that holds up well over time.

The Tile Collection: 3D Textures

While all Mark Krebs wool rugs feature meticulous craftsmanship, the Tile Collection is especially impressive. The geometric pattern is actually carved by hand using large shears. The different pile heights create a three-dimensional texture that allows subtle shadows to play across the rug surface as the light shifts throughout the day.

Unlike the Rose Garden and Stitch Collections, the Tile Rug features a plush feel similar to that of a hand-knotted rug. It’s woven on a double-back pile loom, which locks each yarn firmly into place to ensure a durable and flexible finished product.

Monochromatic dip-dyed yarns give the color of each Tile Rug a rich depth. Three colorways are available: reddish-brown Sumac, light green Moss and creamy off-white Fossil. Explore our full collection of Mark Krebs rugs to find distinctive, handmade floor coverings for any room of your home.
