Ekobo Bamboo Dinnerware: Sustainable, Timeless Designs

Good design is defined by more than just form and function. The materials used to create an object and how it’s made are just as important, especially in today’s world. Designers and consumers alike are seeking out eco-friendly, sustainable options, and Ekobo has delivered. By combining simple, practical design with responsibly sourced materials, Ekobo has created a line of inspired kitchen and bath accessories.

A Family-Focused Mission

Boo and Bruno Louis established Ekobo in France in 2003. Their partnership in life informed every aspect of their business partnership, especially after they had their first child.

Already committed to applying green practices in their design and manufacturing processes, their growing family created even more motivation to develop eco-friendly products. Non-toxic, reusable dishware for kids was at the top of the list, which led to the creation of their signature bamboo fiber eco-composite.

Now the parents of three girls, co-founders Boo and Bruno have developed an incredible selection of practical home product designs featuring sustainable materials like cork, rePET (recycled polyester) fabric, food-grade silicone and GOTS-certified organic cotton. It’s a clear reflection of Ekobo’s mission: to be devoted to improving the way they engage with people and our planet.

Sustainability in Action

With years of experience in Fairtrade bamboo handicrafts, it’s no surprise that the Louises turned to this renewable material for their designs. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable materials on the planet. This robust plant grows at a rapid pace of up to one meter per day and requires significantly less water to grow. Both biodegradable and compostable, bamboo actually helps to curb greenhouse gases by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.

Choosing bamboo as the basis for their signature products was just the first step in an eco-conscious mission. Ekobo’s co-founders also minimize waste by utilizing the bamboo left behind during the manufacturing of flooring and chopsticks. They’ve partnered with select FSC-certified factories in China (where 80% of Asia’s bamboo is grown) to source this raw material.

From there, a local manufacturing partner near these factories transforms the raw bamboo by grinding it into a fine powder and mixing it with melamine resin and dry pigments. This takes place in a BSCI-compliant facility that meets all current safety standards and health codes and engages in social responsibility. The result is Ekobo’s exclusive BIOBU® eco-composite, which is then used to create a variety of beautiful home accessories.

An Exciting Dinnerware Debut

At Unison, we have a long-standing relationship with Ekobo that began in 2015. Over the last decade, the brand’s beautiful, functional dinnerware, colorful children’s pieces and bamboo bath accessories have been staples in our assortment.

For the Summer 2025 collection, we’re excited to debut new Ekobo dinnerware shapes and colors. With thicker profiles and a smooth matte finish, the pieces in this collection resemble classic ceramic dinnerware. Available in three neutral tones (Off White, Stone and Black), Ekobo’s new bowls, plates, serving utensils and serving platters have a timeless and effortless elegance. It’s easy to picture these pieces being used for casual, weekday meals and sophisticated dinner parties alike.

While the beautiful design and impressive versatility of this dinnerware collection is undeniable, it’s the thoughtful manufacturing process and sustainable materials that really make it unique. This BPA, PVC and phthalate-free Ekobo dinnerware collection is made with a composite of organic bamboo fibers and 100% non-toxic food-grade A5 melamine. The color is integrated directly into the material rather than being applied to the surface, so there’s zero risk of color transfer or leaching.
