Dining Alfresco With Dual Double Wall Glassware

One of summer’s simple pleasures is getting to spend more time outside. Whether you have a large backyard or a tiny balcony, now is the time to make the most of it. This summer we’re committing to enjoying more meals outdoors. Food just tastes better when it’s eaten outside. Fresh air is the ultimate flavor enhancer. Drinks are more refreshing when sipped in the garden. Start a ritual of savoring your first cup of coffee on your patio in the morning. Surprise your family with an impromptu picnic in the yard. Have a campout night and roast some marshmallows over the firepit or grill. Treating yourself to a delicious al fresco meal feels like a mini-vacation, one you can take every day without leaving home.

At Unison, we’re passionate about sharing attractive and practical items that make open-air dining easy. We want you to spend more time enjoying your outdoor space this summer — preferably with a refreshing beverage in hand. This is why we’re excited to introduce you to our Dual Double Wall Tumblers and Pitcher. They’re the perfect way to pair a delicious cocktail with a captivating conversation. Pitcher cocktails allow you to relax and enjoy the moment. You can refresh drinks without making endless trips back to the kitchen.

The Dual Double Wall collection is the glassware you need for simple outdoor dining. The tumblers and pitcher are built to last and they’ll take you from season to season. Keep your drinks cool for longer in the summer or use them for coffee, cocoa, or cider in the fall and winter. So, sit back, relax, and keep reading to learn more about this exquisite glassware collection. We’ve even included a few pitcher drink recipes designed to make the most of everyone’s favorite time of year.

A Better Glass

Our Dual Double Wall Tumblers and Pitcher come to Unison from the Czech Republic. They’re manufactured by leading European glassmakers who have spent nearly 200 years perfecting their craft. Always looking to the future, these glassmakers are on the cutting edge of technology and innovation when it comes to their work. Two centuries in the business mean this glassware is truly time-tested for quality and longevity.

101368_101370_gallery_option

The Dual Double Wall collection is made from sturdy borosilicate glass. Unlike traditional glass, borosilicate is designed to withstand extreme temperatures and is less likely to shatter or break when dropped. Because of its strength and durability, this type of glass is the first choice for laboratories, restaurants, and wineries. Another great feature of this collection is the double-wall construction. This design means hot beverages will stay warm for longer and cool drinks stay chilled. With normal glassware, hot liquid can cause it to crack or become too hot to handle and iced beverages produce condensation as they warm to the temperature of the air.

This is why we love the Dual Double Wall Tumblers and Pitcher. They work like a glass within a glass. The vacuum-sealed center layer of air insulates the liquid inside the glass keeping it at your desired temperature for longer. No condensation, no cracks, no burning fingers. Available in a large and medium size, the Dual Double Wall Tumbler is perfect for everyday use. The sturdy design resists chips and scratches — plus it’s dishwasher safe. Classic clean lines and exceptionally clear glass, make this tumbler a beautiful addition to any table setting. At approximately 10 ounces, the medium tumbler is a great size for cocktails, coffee, lattes, or juice. The larger 13.5-ounce tumbler can be used for iced tea, lemonade, or as your everyday water glass.

Your Summer Superhero

The Dual Double Wall Pitcher will be the saving grace of your casual outdoor meals. Whether you’re serving water with lemon, fresh-squeezed juice, or margaritas — any beverage appears delicious in this pitcher. The easy-pour spout means there are no drips or wasted sips and the handle is designed to fit comfortably in your palm. When the temperatures start to drop, don’t forget you can serve warm drinks in this pitcher too. Save yourself time and endless trips back to the kitchen for refills by preparing your cocktail of choice by the pitcher. Nearly any drink can be scaled to pitcher size, just keep the ice separate until you’re ready to serve.

Some Of Our Favorite Pitcher Beverage Recipes

It’s not practical to make single servings of lemonade, sangria, or iced tea. Some drinks are just designed for sharing by the pitcher. So we’ve taken the guesswork out of throwing together a batch of cocktails and compiled a few recipes here. You’ll find refreshing options for summer that are perfect for warm-weather sipping. And with the Dual Double Wall collection, just because the leaves are changing color it doesn’t mean you have to go inside. We’ve also included an apple cider recipe so that you can still enjoy your outdoor space and keep warm with a classic fall favorite. Here’s to a relaxing time spent outdoors!

Apple Brandy Cocktails
If you’re looking for some inspiration for classic cocktails, check out these recipes from Rhine Hall. They’re a family-owned, small-batch distillery specializing in fruit brandies. If you find yourself in Chicago, we highly recommend a visit to their tasting room.

Vino Francesca Sangria
This recipe from Food & Wine is a simple way to elevate a bottle of rosé and turn it into an appetizing sangria. This sangria is designed to be sipped alongside a delicious meal and not overpower it.

Sparkling Lavender-Thyme Vodka Lemonade
Elevate summer’s favorite beverage with this lemonade recipe from Saveur. A perfect way to use ingredients fresh from your herb garden, you can also skip the vodka and make a sophisticated non-alcoholic libation.

Mulled Apple Cider
A classic warm beverage, this slow cooker recipe from The Kitchn is perfect for sipping around the fire once the weather starts to change. Add a bit of whiskey or rum to turn this old-standby into an adult beverage.

No matter the season, The Dual Double Wall Tumblers and Pitcher will be there to help with all your summer dining needs. From hot to cold, coffee to cocktails — this glassware collection is time tested and ready to serve.

Distinctive Dining: Get To Know The Nene Collection

At Unison, we believe that furniture should be versatile, timeless, and designed to last. In pursuit of those standards, we are proud to introduce you to the Nene collection. These tables and chairs come to us from Italy where they’re made by a family-owned company that has been producing high-quality furniture for over 30 years. Light, fresh, and contemporary, the Nene collection consists of armchairs, side chairs and tables, available in black or white. Inspired by simple efficiency, you can see that clean lines and strong geometry are masterfully at work here.

page_2-3_nene_white_dining_table_side_chairs_1

Nene Chairs
The Nene chairs can be used practically anywhere. They’re a bold choice to complete a modern dining room or consider the Nene side chair if you need a space-saving desk or vanity seat. Take Nene outdoors and this chair really shows off its stuff. These polypropylene chairs are a perfect choice for your patio because they are designed to withstand the elements and won’t mold or crack. You can place them in direct sunlight because they’ve been treated with a UV resistant coating so the color won’t fade over time. Quality furniture — even outdoor — shouldn’t have to be replaced every year. They’re durable enough to use commercially as well.

Both the arm and side chairs are stackable so you can save precious storage space, which you’ll appreciate if you choose to tuck them away during the winter. Plus, they’re lightweight so you won’t struggle to move a stack of them on your own. And unlike the hard plastic seats of the past, these chairs are comfortable. Polypropylene furniture is pliant, so it moves and adjusts with your body. The flexibility of these chairs means they’ll withstand light twisting and torquing, so you don’t have to worry about your guests’ every move.

101408_101406_gallery_option_1

What Is Polypropylene?
The Nene chair is made from polypropylene – a tough, durable and easy to recycle plastic discovered in the 1950s by an Italian chemist. It’s lightweight and flexible, yet sturdy enough to withstand heavy use and the outdoor elements.

Because of its strength and durability, you’ll find polypropylene furniture not just in homes but in many businesses too. From schools to offices, to restaurants and hotels — commercial interior designers know and trust polypropylene will hold up to a business’s heavy use. Many high-end furniture designers have embraced polypropylene because of its power and versatility. One of those is celebrated Italian designer Paolo Vernier.

Perfection by Paolo
Paolo Vernier was destined to create attractive seating, he began drawing and designing chairs at a young age. He’s known for his projects featuring simple clean lines and elegant structure. Paolo’s designs are all about the details and he’s chosen to embrace technology alongside artistry. He’s always looking for ways to improve the production process and focuses on creating quality pieces at an affordable price. Paolo’s work is an accessible way to bring modern Italian furniture into your home. The Nene chair is one of Paolo’s most famous designs. We love its simple shape and ultimate functionality — which is why we’re excited to be bringing this set of tables and chairs to Unison.

101407__stacked_gallery_option

Nene Table
Strong and sturdy, the Nene Table’s rounded corners and modern aesthetic can be used at home or commercially. The table features your choice of black or white powder-coated steel legs and a wood grain melamine top that resists stains and warping.

At home, its slim profile keeps your space from feeling cluttered and heavy. It seats up to 6 and is perfect for smaller dining rooms, eat-in kitchens or breakfast nooks. At the office, this modern and solid piece makes an ideal work table or desk.

Creating Your Very Own Modern Home Library

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.” — Cicero

Interior designer and author Nina Freudenberger opens her book, Bibliostyle: How We Live at Home with Books, with this famous quote by the Roman orator, statesman, and philosopher. We couldn’t agree more.

At Unison, we believe every home should have a library. That’s why we’re excited to introduce you to the Wolcott Bookcase. This wood bookcase serves as a dedication to our love of books and the modern home library. Tablets and E-readers are practical, efficient, and great for travel. But nothing compares to the experience of holding a well-loved book in your hands. The Wolcott Bookcase represents our commitment to keeping the tradition of the home library alive and well. With this piece, we hope to inspire you to build a library you love.

pg_8_wolcott_sand_and_pewter_bookcases_1

Recently, we connected with Nina to discuss her latest release and the importance of a home filled with books. She shares with us her design secrets for creating the ultimate modern home library. Read on to learn everything you need to know to create your very own library.

Why Every Home Needs a Library

“I think every home tells a story,” Nina says, “and there is no more personal way to enter a person’s home than through their private book collection. The books in a home tell the hopes, dreams, interests, and values of the owner.” You have hobbies, pastimes, and passions. The books you read represent how you spend your time. Keeping books tucked out of sight does a disservice to yourself and your home. You’ll be more likely to pick up a book if it’s in plain view and attractively displayed.

Your bookshelves also give visitors an insight into your mind. Connecting with guests about the books you love and the hobbies you share makes for great conversation and strengthens relationships. “Books mean so much to us as a society and to us personally,” Nina says. “Their physical presence is a sense of comfort and legacy to every owner and adds warmth to every home.”

101344_101378_gallery_option

How to Build a Modern Home Library

If you’re starting from scratch, building a home library may seem intimidating. Libraries are one of the most personal collections you can have in your home. When you’re creating something so intimate, the key is to listen to your intuition. Follow your curiosity and creative interests. Choose books that are inspiring or mean something to you. As Nina explains, “It is not about the value of your collection but about what you really want to be surrounded with. It is a commitment to start a collection of a larger size that covers your home. I think you have to truly want to be surrounded by books you love, have read or want to in the future.”

When it comes to displaying your collections, a bookcase or decorative shelving works great, but don’t be afraid to get creative. Nina shares a discovery she made while writing her book. “I found that people with incredible collections were actually quite casual in their display. They just LIVED amongst their books… They were just there – in their home – on shelves, stacked on the floor, on top of armoires and cabinets, wherever they found room.”

101345_gallery_2

Showcase Your Collection With a Modern Bookcase

As part of our mission to celebrate the home library, we’ve introduced the Wolcott Bookcase. These bookcases are built by a family-owned company in Ontario, Canada. This company has been carefully crafting sustainable, high-quality, solid wood furniture in North America for over 20 years.

With a focus on premium details, the Wolcott Bookcase features mitered top corners and a rear ledge that prevents books from slipping behind the case. Made from sturdy white oak, this wood bookcase will be a fixture in your home for many years to come. This bookcase is available in a small and large size, as well as two finishes — Sand and Pewter. It coordinates with our Wolcott and Fulton furniture collections, but also looks great on its own. With a variety of options, this bookcase is designed fit in any home.

101343_101344_gallery_5

Books in Every Room

While we admire a grand home library, there’s no reason to keep your collection limited to one room. Spread out your books and store them in the rooms where you use them. Cookbooks on a tidy shelf in the kitchen. Children’s storybooks in their bedrooms. Reference books in the study. It’s functional and practical.

We love the Wolcott Bookcase for its versatility. It comes in two widths, making it easy to find the right size for your space. The large bookcase would be a great anchor piece in your living room or office. The small bookcase works great in compact spaces like bedrooms. However you decide to display your books, there is no right or wrong way to organize them. While working on her book, Nina was fascinated by the many different ways people catalog their libraries.

“I loved how when we explored these 32 homes each and every one had a different organization system – it was personal to each and every owner… They organize their collections by inspiration or by their own distinct reference points – something which is so personal that no one else could figure out other than them. I love that. I think making your library your own is the entire point of having one.”

101346_gallery_1

Nina Freudenberger’s Book Collecting Method

Nina shared with us her favorite approach to building her library. “I collect books as I travel and always pick up a few no matter where in the world I am (and drag them home in my suitcase).” Nina says, “I am very specific about what I keep and always write a date and note in the front when I got it, read it, when it was given to me or where I was when I picked it up. This gives my books a secondary sentimental value and I hope a legacy that my children can piece together when I’m gone.”

How To Create A Holiday Tablescape

It’s the season of gathering and when it comes to Thanksgiving, that’s best done around the table. When food is your number one priority, it’s difficult for a host to focus on all the layers that go into each place setting. Here are some simple but eye-catching ideas to set the scene for your guests while featuring your favorite dishes in timeless serve pieces.

Dinnerware

unison_catalog_5_18_4489_v1

Set the scene with stunning dinnerware in a range of sizes. A neutral setting allows you to add color elsewhere throughout the table and make perfect pieces that function from season to season. The Rim Black Dinnerware Collection is a lovely range that allows you to mix and match sizes depending on what you need. Each plate and bowl comes in 3 sizes and includes a distinctive raised rim so everyone will keep their plate full of food and off your table. Talk about easy clean-up.

A classic white dining set can make a serene setting, especially when it’s the Medaillon Dinnerware Collection. Our 3-piece set includes a Dinner Plate, Salad Plate, and Soup Bowl making it simple for you to add on the Bread and Butter Plate for an extra side or serving dessert. Shop the full Medaillon Collection to get everything you’ll need from serveware to entertaining.

Flatware

h19_eve_brushed_gold_flatware_set_etoile_black_and_gold_napkin_alternate

Your flatware may not seem like the focal point of your table, but with the right pieces it can steal the show. Our Essential Chrome Flatware makes a classically modern statement with every meal. The high-shine chrome flourishes in any setting and can be mixed and matched with any of our Bistro Serveware. Any selection from the Teak, Ivory, and Black colors ways will add a layer of comfort and warmth to the table. Don’t forget to add a Pie Server to dish out all of those delicious desserts.

Want to elevate your table for the holiday season? Look no further than our Eve Brushed Gold Flatware. This set adds a touch of glimmer to your space and with 24-carat brushed gold plating over stainless steel, they won’t wear over time. Pair them with the matching 5-piece Serveware Set to properly share your salads, large dishes, and pies.

Glassware

h19_page_5_lsa_otis_white_wine_glasses_s4_force_small_tray (2)

Each of our glassware collections comes in a variety of sizes, making it easy to choose 1, 2, or 3 pieces. But when it comes to entertaining, it’s nice to get everything in one place with our drinkware bundles. The Cast Tumbler makes for a great water glass to set aside wine glasses. Adding a water pitcher or carafe will also help you cut back on trips to the kitchen.

If you’re setting both red and white wine glasses, the LSA International Otis Red + White Wine Glasses will add the perfect modern touch. These handblown glasses feature delicate stems and straight-sided, cylindrical bowls. In a set of 4, your cabinet will be stocked and ready when company arrives.

Serveware

101235_gallery_option

Your table isn’t complete without food to pass around it. Try a new serving piece like our Round Walnut Wood Board, large enough to fit your turkey and great for carving. For a more traditional take on serveware, our Grace Gray Serve Bowl + Platter will easily carry your sides and salads. Of course, we can’t forget about dessert. Easily transport pies from the oven to the table in the Falcon Salad Bowl. Don’t let the name fool you, these dishes can bake up to 530ºF and sit atop a trivet to cool.

Table Linens + Placemats

h19_page_16_dot_placemats_heller_medaillon_grace_falcon_rim_plates_walter_galvin_black_eve_chrome_bistro_black_essential_chrome_flatware_14

Now that we have the dining necessities covered, it’s time to really dress the table. Something like a table runner will function as the foundation of your table decor. The Etoile Black and Gold Table Runner adds a touch of festive while remaining neutral. For a real touch of shine, add the matching Napkins held together by a Brushed Gold Napkin Ring.

If you’re wanting a more casual look, placemats may be the way to go. However, there is nothing unrefined about the Dot Round Leather Placemats. Made from 100% recycled leather, these circular placemats come in 5 colors and look just as good mixed as they do matched.

Vases + Votives

h19_front_cover_nocto_taper_candleholder_rim_dinnerware_luna_vase_linen_napkin_kolmar_oak_dining_table_1 (1)

The final touch to make your table come to life. Whether for illumination or blooms, you will want to make a centerpiece statement. For a grander scene, we love to accompany the LSA International Stems Lantern and Vase in clear and slate (that comes with a candle but is also great for florals) with the matching votives, scattered about the table. Keeping in line with a gold theme, simply add the LSA Space Vase and Votive Holders to achieve a modern, metallic focal point. For a more subtle statement, warm up the space with Luna Vases in both brown and clear, perfect for delicate stems floating atop the brass lid accent.

A Timeless Favorite: Omaggio Vases

Timeless, effortless, contemporary. There’s always that one piece in your home you go back to time and time again to add a standout element to your space. A piece that fits into any landscape and can go from season to season with ease. We feel the same about many pieces in our collection. The ones that have been consistent customer favorites and continuously speak to our love for modern design. This sentiment rings especially true for our ever-expanding selection of Omaggio Vases.

a475084lv_a475084mv_100095_gallery_family

The Omaggio Collection was designed by Ditte Reckweg and Jelen Schou for Kähler, a Danish company known worldwide for their beautiful and functional ceramics. Besides designing for internationally acknowledged companies such as Georg Jensen, Skagerak and Kähler, the design duo has also launched Stilleben, a brand of their own. Stilleben not only boasts a line of handmade ceramics, but the pair also travels frequently to handpick one-of-a-kind items for their webshop and boutiques. Between Stilleben and the companies they have designed for, the Danish duo has created countless pieces that have become worldwide best sellers. Their first and longest-standing success has been Omaggio, which was originally launched by Kähler in 2009.

07AFA115-0F06-4404-838D-390DC27AE73F

Reckweg and Schou Nordentoft created this renowned piece as a tribute to Kähler, stating that it “reinterpreted the classic raw stripes”. Its distinction lies in the coarse glazed brush strokes and modern shape, providing both contrast and utility when displaying your blooms.

unison_7_18_8027_comp_13

Available in Black, Silver, and Pearl—all three colorways evoke a different mood, while all being fluent in any design aesthetic. The designers note that these color choices are a testament to “the Omaggio line’s timelessness and the perpetual relevance within contemporary interior decoration”. Each piece is handmade and made to last. We can see this in the slight variation in color or shape from vase to vase, deeming these a quality, one-of-a-kind accent for your home.

unison_7_18_7745_1_6

At Unison, we have loved featuring a variety of pieces from the Omaggio collection throughout the years, starting with the bold Black in a wide range of sizes, followed by the Silver and then adding Pearl. With a striking shape and contemporary pattern, you will want to add these to every room and surface. As the Large and Medium shapes function as stand-out centerpieces, the Small size works wonderfully on a side table or mantel. Plus, they make for a memorable gift.

The Art of the Serve: 50-Plus Years of Cylinda-Line

Stainless steel is often seen as a purely functional material. However, some designers have taken it to sleek and distinctive new heights. One of those is Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, who launched the Cylinda-Line collection of serveware in 1967.

Cylinda-Line recently hit its 50th anniversary, furthering its reputation as an everlasting classic with modern appeal. Produced by Stelton, the collection we have here at Unison is highlighted by bar essentials and a serving tray. And we’ve recently added the coffee press, creamer, and sugar bowl.

h19_cylinda-line_press_coffee_maker_creamer_sugar_bowl_medaillon_bread_and_butter_plate_mug_euclid_natural_round_dining_table_alternate_1 (1)

Signature Style
Consistent through every piece is a cylindrical form — simple and refined. In an interesting play on the norm, the stainless steel used in Cylinda-Line has a lightly brushed finish. Back in the ‘60s, this was a welcome softer alternative to the brilliant, extra-polished stainless steel accessories available. Cylinda-Line is also known for its remarkable proportions; each piece brings balance and unity to the table.

h19_page_6_cylinda-line_barware_euclid_black_dining_table_cylinder_rocks_glass

Inspired Designer
Creativity runs in the family for Jacobsen, who was actually inspired for Cylinda-Line by some sketches made by his son-in-law, Peter Holmblad. Jacobsen and Holmblad began working together on a series of products focused on tea and coffee service and barware.

Early on, Cylinda-Line won the ID-prize 1967 by The Danish Society of Industrial Design and The International Design Award 1968 by The American Institute of Interior Designers. He truly emerged as a star of modernism. Yet many would say his earlier work was what set him on a path to success.

Screen Shot 2019-10-25 at 3.06.55 PM

Jacobsen attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he did architectural projects and interior design. In fact, most of his famous furniture designs — the Ant, Swan and No. 7 chair; and lamp designs — were originally created for architectural studies.

He was known to be a restless spirit and a perfectionist. In fact, the designer’s exacting nature is expressed in quotes he’s now known for: “As thin as possible, and never in the middle” and “Today, we have to make a truly low/round project.”

Partner, Process, Product: A Look Into Fog Linen Dishtowels

We’re drawn to timeless materials and made-to-last craftsmanship. Naturally, that leads us to linen. Particularly, Fog Linen. Created by Yumiko Sekine in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, the line of home goods and clothing was born of her desire to find affordable everyday linens that she loved in her childhood.

7_yumiko

Partner:
To start her journey, Sekine visited Lithuania, a country known for linen production since the Middle Ages. That’s because it grows flax, a plant from which fibers are spun into linen. Remarkably, she discovered there weren’t a lot of linen goods in Lithuanian stores, which inspired her to produce her own product designs right there in Lithuania.

gridfog

Process:
Indeed, things began with a DIY spirit, with Sekine first dabbling in things for her own apartment, like an apron and a cover for her teapot. That eventually expanded to include kitchen cloth and pot holder. As Sekine’s own living spaces grew and her needs evolved, her Fog Linen collection grew. Today, after more than a dozen years in business, that personal feel shines through in each of the products.

Like us, Sekine believes in thoughtful design — simple yet mood-evoking. We also both share a love of neutral color palettes and high-quality materials. While small, these pieces have noticeable impact. And purpose, too. Latch on to their utilitarian spirit and use them day after day.

101192_main

Product:
We’re proud to carry Fog Linen dishtowels. The newest arrival is the Herringbone dishtowel, richly woven in taupe and black to complement any setting. While it dries dishes and hands with ease, the beautiful design may have you wanting to display it front and center as a dinner napkin as well.

pantry-2

A few more reasons we love linen (and you should too)…

Linen is extremely ecofriendly. Think of these dishtowels as alternatives to paper towels. Every year, Americans use more than 13 billion pounds of paper towels, which leads to over 3,000 tons of waste. If each U.S. household used one less 70-sheet roll of paper towels, 554,000 trees could be saved every year. Linen is also fully biodegradable. Plus, it can absorb as much as 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet. Keep it on hand in the kitchen to clean up quick spills.

Not only will it save you from the endless cycle of paper towels, but it’s built to last. You can feel its thickness. In fact, linen is 30% stronger than cotton so it will hold up, no matter the mess. While durable, linen is ultra-soft. It may be crisp on first touch, but the more you wash linen, the more supple and soft it gets.

How To Personalize A Rental Apartment

When your home is temporary, it can be difficult to make it feel like home. How do you add your personal style to each room without drastically altering the space itself? With just a few minor updates and additions, making a rental apartment feel like home can be easier than you think. Here are 7 simple tips and tricks for adding personality to your space without the long-term commitment.

catalog_spindle_nightstand_pg_30c_6
1. Swap out generic lighting
Not only is it functional, but adding your own, unique lighting can change a space. If you don’t already have overhead lighting, the Canal Floor Lamp is a perfect choice to create your go-to reading spot. With an adjustable shade and dip switch, this piece can light up just about any room or reading nook. For your bedside, our Enoki Table Lamp is a one-of-a-kind piece that offers ample lighting within reach and easily integrates into a tablescape. If you have overhead lighting that just doesn’t suit you, you might consider a pendant upgrade. These look stunning over a kitchen table as well as framing your bed.

unison_catalog_5_18_5458_v2_3
2. Transform a room with an area rug
Rugs are just what you need to divide up rooms, especially in a smaller space. If you already have a lot of color in your apartment, go for something neutral that can act as a good foundation to your living area. Our Loop Rugs are ideal for large areas and are extremely durable (and cost-effective). Our Montauk Rugs are also a great staple that will last from move to move and is made from 100% wool. Alternatively, a rug can add texture and shape to a room that is in need of an additional element. 4. Find lightweight storage that doubles as an accent piece
No matter the size of your living space, storage is key. If you don’t have extra closet space, you will need to look for inventive ways to keep things organized. Look to options that add a design element while serving a larger purpose. Baskets are a great option for storing rolled up blankets and towels or magazines and books. Or try vertical storage with the Tower Ladder, both lightweight and easy to assemble. You can even create a cohesive look to built-in shelving by adding storage boxes. The Save-It Storage Box Set is suited for keeping your odds and ends organized while looking nice on open shelving or atop your desk.

5. Choose easy-to-install wall decor
Adding wall accents is a necessary but difficult step in making a rental feel like home. Opt for items that are easy to install and cause little damage to your wall. Simple choices like our Heathered Raffia Tray + Bowls or Plywood + Mono Wall Clocks will make a positive design impact with very little effort (aka, no professional installation necessary). For a more functional accent, you can try our Ribbon Wall Shelf complete with mounting instructions and wall template for easy installation. Plus, they can hold up to 45 lbs. So they are great for incorporating picture frames and other small accents to your space without taking up surface space.

Having a basic dinnerware set that can function for any occasion is key, like our Grace Gray Dinnerware paired with the Galvin Copper Flatware Set. Floor Plans: Discover Our Ever-Expanding Rug Collection

Rugs are anchors. Connectors. Comforters. And they’re one thing you truly need before your space is complete.

No matter where you place an area rug it instantly adds spatial definition, creating a frame in and around which to place your furniture. It also ties together your color scheme, not to mention adds a layer of texture that just happens to feel good underfoot.

We offer a range of rugs in our collection, continually adding various colors, styles, and sizes to fit your needs. Tying all of our rugs together are a few key elements that are core to what we stand for: versatility, durability, construction, materials, and quality.

Exceptional Materials

101090_101091_101092_gallery_option_2
The majority of our rugs are crafted from soft, fine wool from New Zealand. Natural, renewable and biodegradable, wool is also naturally breathable. It helps control humidity, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Plus, it’s naturally insulating, retaining warmth and reducing energy costs. You’ll also appreciate wool’s durability and elasticity; even after a lot of foot traffic, it returns to its original shape.

The decision to source our wool from New Zealand was purposeful. It’s a country that’s been at the forefront of wool production since the 1800s and known for high-quality wool produced using environmentally responsible methods.

Thoughtful Craftsmanship

unison_catalog_5_18_5407_11
We believe that fabrication method matters as much as materials, and should reflect timeless craftsmanship. Our Stitch rugs, for example, are handwoven on a Punja loom in India, then washed before being finished and bound by hand. The results are closely scrutinized for weave consistency, rug density, pile length, color trueness and clarity of pattern. Feel and durability matters, too, as we bring you this exclusive that will last through the years.

Our Sashi Geo rugs are also created by hand. This time, using a knotting style before being washed two or three times to remove loose fibers and bring out that lush softness.

These methods produce quality, durable rugs. Yet they’re also important for being environmentally friendly. No energy-consuming machines — just timeless hand craftsmanship.

Global Influences

We’ve always been inspired by Nordic design, which is notable for clean lines, simplicity, and functionality. Nordic influence can be seen throughout our rug collection, particularly in the Higgins, Kostner, Loop, and Plat rugs, all made with responsibly sourced materials. These rugs emanate a feeling of harmony, connecting you with your environment as a seemingly organic element of your space. True to Nordic ethos, these pieces are designed to last, rather than be replaced.

You’ll see a lot of our rug fabrication is done in India, and that’s because it’s a country with a history of rug weaving that dates as far back as the 1600s. Today, India is one of the biggest rug producers in the world. Rug making techniques there have been passed down generationally amongst highly skilled artisans. You can see traditional Indian construction methods in our original Sashi Geo, Stitch and Turin rugs. The hand-knotting and hand-weaving techniques make them a valuable investment.

We also have a domestically produced rug, Tate, which is created from durable polypropylene using hand-guided stitching techniques. Again, timeless quality is key and this rug is reversible for long-lasting wear and manufactured by an American company with a 100-year history.

Environment & Sustainability

We lend an eye to our fabrication partners’ health and environmental standards. For example, the maker of our HigginsKostnerLoop, and Plat rugs live up to the EU regulation, REACH, which was adopted to protect human health and the environment. They adhere to a Product Environment Guideline in collaboration with an expert consulting chemist.

Additionally, The maker of our Higgins, Kostner, Loop, and Plat rugs, as well as the maker of our Unison exclusive Sashi Geo, Stitch and Turin rugs are part of Care & Fair, an organization fighting child labor and working to improve the conditions of life for the carpet weavers and their families.

Inspired Patterns & Artist Collaborations
Being designers and pattern makers ourselves, we love to create original rug designs you won’t find anywhere else.

Sashi Geo, for one, is a subtle geometric-inspired pattern that, upon closer look, appears to feature two joined triangles. Stitch is another fan favorite Unison design, known for a soothing and repetitive symmetrical sprinkling of flecks.

We’ve also collaborated with Chicago artist Chad Kouri for our Turin rug. It’s based on his “Color Grid” series of original compositions, only here recast in a modern achromatic palette. Its hand-tufted fabrication gives it an inviting tactile quality.

We hope you enjoy discovering all of our rug collections and seeing just how they can make an impact in your home — for years and years.

Timeless Ceramics: The Rich History of Hasami Porcelain

The Hasami Dinnerware Collection originates from the town of Hasami in Nagasaki Prefecture, one of the most prominent pottery districts in Japan. For more than 400 years, beginning during the Edo period, craftspeople in Hasami have been making porcelainware. At that time, a system was created by the Hasami artisans that allowed them to mass produce their porcelain products, making them affordable and consistent in quality.

During the Edo period, Hasami Porcelain was first distributed throughout Japan and Europe through the nearby port of Nagasaki. Today, the fine craftsmanship has crossed even more borders. We have partnered with Hasami Porcelain, designed by Takuhiro Shinomoto of Tortoise in Venice, California, to bring you a new vision of the tableware.

At Unison, our range of Hasami pieces features the Gloss Gray and Black dinnerware collections, as well as the Ash White and Dark Gray plates and bowls from the minimalist Hasami Grey Collection. To complement the dinnerware, we also offer a full range of timeless pieces including: mugs, coffee and tea accessories, serve bowls and planter sets.

With the plates and bowls available in a 3.5”, 5.5”, 7.5”, 8.5” and 10” diameter, there is a size suited for every meal. The range of sizes available allows the plates to also function as a lid, coaster or tray when needed. Or choose the Hasami Ash Wood Trays for a mixed material approach to covering the bowls.

hasami_black_gallery_option_2

The Hasami plates and bowls look so beautiful when stacked, you may even consider storing them on view in a cabinet or on a shelf. In fact, all sizes of the bowls, plates, mugs and drinkware are able to nest, providing for ease while serving and efficient storage. The inspiration behind Hasami Porcelain’s stacking concept comes from traditional Japanese tiered food-storage boxes, Jūbako. This design approach is on full display when pairing the Hasami Glass Tumbler with the wood lid with gasket.

HasamiBlogUpdateFA24_2_620x500

You’ll notice each Hasami piece has an organic look which stems from traditional Japanese manufacturing techniques. In Japan, the methodology has been efficient and collaborative: Each product is passed onto different craftsmen in various parts of the village to undergo a specific step of handwork until the product is completed. Craftsmen are skilled in their own specialized roles, such as soil and stone mixing, product molding, glazing, and kiln maintenance during firing. They each contribute in their own way to create a piece that is naturally different from all the rest.

web_or_social_hasami_gloss_gray_planters (1)

Takuhiro Shinomoto draws from that “many hands” approach to achieve the same organic result. He produces each piece using several different kilns. The stackable, single module set of ceramicware with straight clean lines requires extreme precision. He’s developed a way to shrink them in kilns so precisely that they still fit together as one piece when they’re done being fired.

What you get in the end is timeless design and functionality — a crossroads that we’ve long been drawn to here at Unison. Because they were made using traditional glazing techniques with a proprietary blend of stone and clay materials, the feel and look is altogether natural.

HasamiBlogUpdateFA24_3_620x500

We encourage you to explore the whole Hasami Collection and imagine the possibilities. These pieces have made quite the journey to get to you, starting 400 years ago in a mountainside Japanese town. And we know when they enter your modern space, they’ll be there to stay.
