A Timeless Favorite: Omaggio Vases

Timeless, effortless, contemporary. There’s always that one piece in your home you go back to time and time again to add a standout element to your space. A piece that fits into any landscape and can go from season to season with ease. We feel the same about many pieces in our collection. The ones that have been consistent customer favorites and continuously speak to our love for modern design. This sentiment rings especially true for our ever-expanding selection of Omaggio Vases.

a475084lv_a475084mv_100095_gallery_family

The Omaggio Collection was designed by Ditte Reckweg and Jelen Schou for Kähler, a Danish company known worldwide for their beautiful and functional ceramics. Besides designing for internationally acknowledged companies such as Georg Jensen, Skagerak and Kähler, the design duo has also launched Stilleben, a brand of their own. Stilleben not only boasts a line of handmade ceramics, but the pair also travels frequently to handpick one-of-a-kind items for their webshop and boutiques. Between Stilleben and the companies they have designed for, the Danish duo has created countless pieces that have become worldwide best sellers. Their first and longest-standing success has been Omaggio, which was originally launched by Kähler in 2009.

07AFA115-0F06-4404-838D-390DC27AE73F

Reckweg and Schou Nordentoft created this renowned piece as a tribute to Kähler, stating that it “reinterpreted the classic raw stripes”. Its distinction lies in the coarse glazed brush strokes and modern shape, providing both contrast and utility when displaying your blooms.

unison_7_18_8027_comp_13

Available in Black, Silver, and Pearl—all three colorways evoke a different mood, while all being fluent in any design aesthetic. The designers note that these color choices are a testament to “the Omaggio line’s timelessness and the perpetual relevance within contemporary interior decoration”. Each piece is handmade and made to last. We can see this in the slight variation in color or shape from vase to vase, deeming these a quality, one-of-a-kind accent for your home.

unison_7_18_7745_1_6

At Unison, we have loved featuring a variety of pieces from the Omaggio collection throughout the years, starting with the bold Black in a wide range of sizes, followed by the Silver and then adding Pearl. With a striking shape and contemporary pattern, you will want to add these to every room and surface. As the Large and Medium shapes function as stand-out centerpieces, the Small size works wonderfully on a side table or mantel. Plus, they make for a memorable gift.

The Art of the Serve: 50-Plus Years of Cylinda-Line

Stainless steel is often seen as a purely functional material. However, some designers have taken it to sleek and distinctive new heights. One of those is Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, who launched the Cylinda-Line collection of serveware in 1967.

Cylinda-Line recently hit its 50th anniversary, furthering its reputation as an everlasting classic with modern appeal. Produced by Stelton, the collection we have here at Unison is highlighted by bar essentials and a serving tray. And we’ve recently added the coffee press, creamer, and sugar bowl.

Signature Style
Consistent through every piece is a cylindrical form — simple and refined. In an interesting play on the norm, the stainless steel used in Cylinda-Line has a lightly brushed finish. Back in the ‘60s, this was a welcome softer alternative to the brilliant, extra-polished stainless steel accessories available. Cylinda-Line is also known for its remarkable proportions; each piece brings balance and unity to the table.

Inspired Designer
Creativity runs in the family for Jacobsen, who was actually inspired for Cylinda-Line by some sketches made by his son-in-law, Peter Holmblad. Jacobsen and Holmblad began working together on a series of products focused on tea and coffee service and barware.

Early on, Cylinda-Line won the ID-prize 1967 by The Danish Society of Industrial Design and The International Design Award 1968 by The American Institute of Interior Designers. He truly emerged as a star of modernism. Yet many would say his earlier work was what set him on a path to success.

Screen Shot 2019-10-25 at 3.06.55 PM

Jacobsen attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he did architectural projects and interior design. In fact, most of his famous furniture designs — the Ant, Swan and No. 7 chair; and lamp designs — were originally created for architectural studies.

He was known to be a restless spirit and a perfectionist. In fact, the designer’s exacting nature is expressed in quotes he’s now known for: “As thin as possible, and never in the middle” and “Today, we have to make a truly low/round project.”

Partner, Process, Product: A Look Into Fog Linen Dishtowels

We’re drawn to timeless materials and made-to-last craftsmanship. Naturally, that leads us to linen. Particularly, Fog Linen. Created by Yumiko Sekine in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, the line of home goods and clothing was born of her desire to find affordable everyday linens that she loved in her childhood.

7_yumiko

Partner:
To start her journey, Sekine visited Lithuania, a country known for linen production since the Middle Ages. That’s because it grows flax, a plant from which fibers are spun into linen. Remarkably, she discovered there weren’t a lot of linen goods in Lithuanian stores, which inspired her to produce her own product designs right there in Lithuania.

gridfog

Process:
Indeed, things began with a DIY spirit, with Sekine first dabbling in things for her own apartment, like an apron and a cover for her teapot. That eventually expanded to include kitchen cloth and pot holder. As Sekine’s own living spaces grew and her needs evolved, her Fog Linen collection grew. Today, after more than a dozen years in business, that personal feel shines through in each of the products.

Like us, Sekine believes in thoughtful design — simple yet mood-evoking. We also both share a love of neutral color palettes and high-quality materials. While small, these pieces have noticeable impact. And purpose, too. Latch on to their utilitarian spirit and use them day after day.

101192_main

Product:
We’re proud to carry Fog Linen dishtowels. The newest arrival is the Herringbone dishtowel, richly woven in taupe and black to complement any setting. While it dries dishes and hands with ease, the beautiful design may have you wanting to display it front and center as a dinner napkin as well.

pantry-2

A few more reasons we love linen (and you should too)…

Linen is extremely ecofriendly. Think of these dishtowels as alternatives to paper towels. Every year, Americans use more than 13 billion pounds of paper towels, which leads to over 3,000 tons of waste. If each U.S. household used one less 70-sheet roll of paper towels, 554,000 trees could be saved every year. Linen is also fully biodegradable. Plus, it can absorb as much as 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet. Keep it on hand in the kitchen to clean up quick spills.

Not only will it save you from the endless cycle of paper towels, but it’s built to last. You can feel its thickness. In fact, linen is 30% stronger than cotton so it will hold up, no matter the mess. While durable, linen is ultra-soft. It may be crisp on first touch, but the more you wash linen, the more supple and soft it gets.

How To Personalize A Rental Apartment

When your home is temporary, it can be difficult to make it feel like home. How do you add your personal style to each room without drastically altering the space itself? With just a few minor updates and additions, making a rental apartment feel like home can be easier than you think. Here are 7 simple tips and tricks for adding personality to your space without the long-term commitment.

catalog_spindle_nightstand_pg_30c_6
1. Swap out generic lighting
Not only is it functional, but adding your own, unique lighting can change a space. If you don’t already have overhead lighting, the Canal Floor Lamp is a perfect choice to create your go-to reading spot. With an adjustable shade and dip switch, this piece can light up just about any room or reading nook. For your bedside, our Enoki Table Lamp is a one-of-a-kind piece that offers ample lighting within reach and easily integrates into a tablescape. If you have overhead lighting that just doesn’t suit you, you might consider a pendant upgrade. These look stunning over a kitchen table as well as framing your bed.

unison_catalog_5_18_5458_v2_3
2. Transform a room with an area rug
Rugs are just what you need to divide up rooms, especially in a smaller space. If you already have a lot of color in your apartment, go for something neutral that can act as a good foundation to your living area. Our Loop Rugs are ideal for large areas and are extremely durable (and cost-effective). Our Montauk Rugs are also a great staple that will last from move to move and is made from 100% wool. Alternatively, a rug can add texture and shape to a room that is in need of an additional element. Our Turin Black Rug makes a statement in its grayscale shapes while our Sashi Geo Shag Rug demands attention wherever it lays.

F19_Page 16_Irving Graphite Sofa and Aurea Natural Table (1)
3. Invest in furniture that can easily transition from space to space
Apartment living can sometimes mean you are moving frequently. If this is the case, you will want pieces that are not only easy to move but will hold up and look good no matter where you go. These timeless items are the ones you will want to invest in. The Aurea Coffee Table is immaculately fitted together without hardware so no assembly is required and no small pieces will ever go missing during a move. A nightstand, a side table, a place to throw your keys; our Quad Rectangular Side Table can find a home can do it all, plus its lightweight design makes it easy to shuffle from room to room. The largest but most important investment? The couch. A piece like the Irving Apartment Sofa is the perfect size and comes in two neutral colors that will fit right in to any home aesthetic.

100873_gallery_2
4. Find lightweight storage that doubles as an accent piece
No matter the size of your living space, storage is key. If you don’t have extra closet space, you will need to look for inventive ways to keep things organized. Look to options that add a design element while serving a larger purpose. Baskets are a great option for storing rolled up blankets and towels or magazines and books. Or try vertical storage with the Tower Ladder, both lightweight and easy to assemble. You can even create a cohesive look to built-in shelving by adding storage boxes. The Save-It Storage Box Set is suited for keeping your odds and ends organized while looking nice on open shelving or atop your desk.

unison_catalog_5_18_4222
5. Choose easy-to-install wall decor
Adding wall accents is a necessary but difficult step in making a rental feel like home. Opt for items that are easy to install and cause little damage to your wall. Simple choices like our Heathered Raffia Tray + Bowls or Plywood + Mono Wall Clocks will make a positive design impact with very little effort (aka, no professional installation necessary). For a more functional accent, you can try our Ribbon Wall Shelf complete with mounting instructions and wall template for easy installation. Plus, they can hold up to 45 lbs. So they are great for incorporating picture frames and other small accents to your space without taking up surface space.

100476_100477_or_b099221_gallery_option_1 (1)
6. Craft a good night’s sleep with quality bedding
Comfort in your apartment is one of the most important factors in making it your own. This may seem like an obvious addition but finding quality bedding will truly make your place feel like home, somewhere you can’t wait to get back to. Dive into comfort with the Franklin Stripe + Hastings Pinpoint bedding, made of Oeko-Tex Certified, 100% European Flax Linen. For a room unlike anyone else’s, look to our Unison-exclusive bedding textiles like Sashi Geo and Stitch. Each pattern comes in multiple colorways so you can easily mix and match.

a386048f_gallery_fall17_3_1
7. Set your table
Take your kitchen or dining table one step further by adding table settings. This extra touch is sure to bring a warm welcome, especially when unexpected company arrives. Having a basic dinnerware set that can function for any occasion is key, like our Grace Gray Dinnerware paired with the Galvin Copper Flatware Set. Finish things off with table linens like napkins, placemats or a table runner to set the stage for entertaining.

Floor Plans: Discover Our Ever-Expanding Rug Collection

Rugs are anchors. Connectors. Comforters. And they’re one thing you truly need before your space is complete.

No matter where you place an area rug it instantly adds spatial definition, creating a frame in and around which to place your furniture. It also ties together your color scheme, not to mention adds a layer of texture that just happens to feel good underfoot.

catalog_summer_d2_irving_spread_1_2

We offer a range of rugs in our collection, continually adding various colors, styles, and sizes to fit your needs. Tying all of our rugs together are a few key elements that are core to what we stand for: versatility, durability, construction, materials, and quality.

Exceptional Materials

101090_101091_101092_gallery_option_2
The majority of our rugs are crafted from soft, fine wool from New Zealand. Natural, renewable and biodegradable, wool is also naturally breathable. It helps control humidity, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Plus, it’s naturally insulating, retaining warmth and reducing energy costs. You’ll also appreciate wool’s durability and elasticity; even after a lot of foot traffic, it returns to its original shape.

The decision to source our wool from New Zealand was purposeful. It’s a country that’s been at the forefront of wool production since the 1800s and known for high-quality wool produced using environmentally responsible methods.

Thoughtful Craftsmanship

unison_catalog_5_18_5407_11
We believe that fabrication method matters as much as materials, and should reflect timeless craftsmanship. Our Stitch rugs, for example, are handwoven on a Punja loom in India, then washed before being finished and bound by hand. The results are closely scrutinized for weave consistency, rug density, pile length, color trueness and clarity of pattern. Feel and durability matters, too, as we bring you this exclusive that will last through the years.

Our Sashi Geo rugs are also created by hand. This time, using a knotting style before being washed two or three times to remove loose fibers and bring out that lush softness.

These methods produce quality, durable rugs. Yet they’re also important for being environmentally friendly. No energy-consuming machines — just timeless hand craftsmanship.

Global Influences

101093-098_kostner_rugs_gallery_1_1
We’ve always been inspired by Nordic design, which is notable for clean lines, simplicity, and functionality. Nordic influence can be seen throughout our rug collection, particularly in the Higgins, Kostner, Loop, and Plat rugs, all made with responsibly sourced materials. These rugs emanate a feeling of harmony, connecting you with your environment as a seemingly organic element of your space. True to Nordic ethos, these pieces are designed to last, rather than be replaced.

You’ll see a lot of our rug fabrication is done in India, and that’s because it’s a country with a history of rug weaving that dates as far back as the 1600s. Today, India is one of the biggest rug producers in the world. Rug making techniques there have been passed down generationally amongst highly skilled artisans. You can see traditional Indian construction methods in our original Sashi Geo, Stitch and Turin rugs. The hand-knotting and hand-weaving techniques make them a valuable investment.

unison_catalog_5_18_5373_1_9

We also have a domestically produced rug, Tate, which is created from durable polypropylene using hand-guided stitching techniques. Again, timeless quality is key and this rug is reversible for long-lasting wear and manufactured by an American company with a 100-year history.

Environment & Sustainability

We lend an eye to our fabrication partners’ health and environmental standards. For example, the maker of our HigginsKostnerLoop, and Plat rugs live up to the EU regulation, REACH, which was adopted to protect human health and the environment. They adhere to a Product Environment Guideline in collaboration with an expert consulting chemist.

loop_rug_collection_gallery_option_1_9

Additionally, The maker of our Higgins, Kostner, Loop, and Plat rugs, as well as the maker of our Unison exclusive Sashi Geo, Stitch and Turin rugs are part of Care & Fair, an organization fighting child labor and working to improve the conditions of life for the carpet weavers and their families.

Inspired Patterns & Artist Collaborations
Being designers and pattern makers ourselves, we love to create original rug designs you won’t find anywhere else.

Sashi Geo, for one, is a subtle geometric-inspired pattern that, upon closer look, appears to feature two joined triangles. Stitch is another fan favorite Unison design, known for a soothing and repetitive symmetrical sprinkling of flecks.

F19_Back Cover_Turin Black Rug Retouch (1)

We’ve also collaborated with Chicago artist Chad Kouri for our Turin rug. It’s based on his “Color Grid” series of original compositions, only here recast in a modern achromatic palette. Its hand-tufted fabrication gives it an inviting tactile quality.

We hope you enjoy discovering all of our rug collections and seeing just how they can make an impact in your home — for years and years.

Timeless Ceramics: The Rich History of Hasami Porcelain

Our Hasami Porcelain collection originates from the town of Hasami in Nagasaki Prefecture, one of the most prominent pottery districts in Japan. For more than 400 years, beginning during the Edo period, craftspeople in Hasami have been making porcelainware. At that time, a system was created by the Hasami artisans that allowed them to mass produce their porcelain products, making them affordable and consistent in quality.

During the Edo period, Hasami Porcelain was first distributed throughout Japan and Europe through the nearby port of Nagasaki. Today, the fine craftsmanship has crossed even more borders. We have partnered with Hasami Porcelain, designed by Takuhiro Shinomoto of Tortoise in Venice, California, to bring you a new vision of the tableware.

wolcott_sand_large_bookcase_hasami_dinnerware_20

At Unison, our range of Hasami Porcelain includes mugs, coffee and tea accessories, serve bowls and planter sets.

With all pieces available in both a Black and Gloss Gray finish, the Hasami Porcelain collection comes full circle with our new addition of Hasami Plates. Available in a 3.5”, 5.5”, 7.5”, 8.5” and 10” diameter, there is a size suited for every meal. The range of sizes available allows the Plates to also function as a lid, coaster or tray when needed.

hasami_black_gallery_option_2

What’s more – when used in tandem, each Hasami plate acts as a lid to its coordinating bowl size. Use this lidded bowl to keep meals warm on the dining table, or stack together for a convenient storage option. Our Hasami Plates and Bowls look so beautiful when stacked, you may even consider storing them on view in a cabinet or on a shelf. In fact, all sizes of the bowls, plates, mugs and drinkware are able to nest, providing for ease while serving and efficient storage. The inspiration behind Hasami Porcelain’s stacking concept comes from traditional Japanese tiered food-storage boxes, Jūbako.

2_hasami_gloss_gray_and_black_plates_herringbone_dishtowel_alternate_2_7

You’ll notice each Hasami piece has an organic look which stems from traditional Japanese manufacturing techniques. In Japan, the methodology has been efficient and collaborative: Each product is passed onto different craftsmen in various parts of the village to undergo a specific step of handwork until the product is completed. Craftsmen are skilled in their own specialized roles, such as soil and stone mixing, product molding, glazing, and kiln maintenance during firing. They each contribute in their own way to create a piece that is naturally different from all the rest.

web_or_social_hasami_gloss_gray_planters (1)

Shinomoto draws from that “many hands” approach to achieve the same organic result. He produces each piece using several different kilns. The stackable, single module set of ceramicware with straight clean lines requires extreme precision. He’s developed a way to shrink them in kilns so precisely that they still fit together as one piece when they’re done being fired.

What you get in the end is timeless design and functionality — a crossroads that we’ve long been drawn to here at Unison. Because they were made using traditional glazing techniques with a proprietary blend of stone and clay materials, the feel and look is altogether natural.

hasami_black_collection_gallery_option_1_1

We encourage you to explore the whole Hasami Collection and imagine the possibilities. These pieces have made quite the journey to get to you, starting 400 years ago in a mountainside Japanese town. And we know when they enter your modern space, they’ll be there to stay.

Solid Sustainability: The Spindle Furniture Collection

We’re always on the hunt for pieces that will be around for the long run. It’s true: “built to last” are not words we use lightly.

As it turns out, that’s the best way to describe our new Spindle furniture collection. The collection is tightly curated to include three pieces that every home needs: a bed frame, nightstand and bench in a choice of solid oak, brushed black, or walnut. Opting for these woods was an easy decision: They both have incredible longevity as well as a beautiful grain for a look that’s natural and at ease in any space.

Every piece in this collection was handcrafted in Serbia by skilled artisans with acute attention to detail. While clean and modern, these statement pieces actually nod to the past. Look closely and you’ll see the collection has aspects of classic, windsor-style furniture, as well as inspiration from the spinning wheel, a design with centuries of heritage.

A Solid Choice
Why invest in solid wood? Along with its strength and durability, it has an aesthetic that’s hard to replicate. It’s all about natural appeal that brings instant warmth to your surroundings. No piece of solid wood is alike and it’s exactly that variety that make them so sought after; the grains look different depending on the cut of the wood.

On top of it all, solid wood proves versatile in any setting, be it bedroom, living room, office, den or kitchen. That’s especially true when you take into account the versatility of the Spindle Nightstand and Bench; they can be used in the entryway, dining or living room as a side table or to provide extra seating. Walking the line between modern and rustic is no easy task, but Spindle has it mastered.

Sustainability Matters
Wood is the greenest material possible when it comes to furniture construction. When responsibly sourced, it’s actually the only renewable building material; trees that are harvested for their wood can be replenished by new growth. And wood is actually good for the climate. Trees absorb carbon throughout their life cycle, taking it out of the atmosphere and into their trunks. When wood is transformed into furniture, it continues to store that carbon.

Wood also means zero waste. Whatever doesn’t make it into furniture can be reused for anything from wood chips for landscaping to sawdust that can be burned for heating.

Get To Know Oak

Oak was a popular material in England among the British Tudor monarchs, and it continues to retain its popularity. That’s largely due to the fact that it’s plentiful, durable and resists damage. Another plus: White oak doesn’t have pores, making it resistant to water. Given its lighter shade it brings levity to a space and has a clean, modern feel. Our oak pieces are finished with hardwax oil, which forms a protective layer to help prevent surface stains.

Brushed Black Details

Richly stained black wood gives these pieces a defined and distinctive look in the bedroom. The black stained finish features a protective brushed lacquer coating which highlights the natural wood grain.

Discover Walnut

Walnut was frequently used to make cabinets and other pieces of furniture in the 17th and 18th centuries. Along with its rich color that grabs the eye and anchors a space, there’s a lot to love about this wood. It’s considered superior for its stability and light weight, not to mention distinctive grain patterns. Our walnut pieces are finished with a natural tinted oil, which adds a layer of protection.

We hope you enjoy exploring the Spindle collection and find that perfect place in your home for these pieces.

Joined Together: Time-Honored Technique Meets Modern Aesthetic

A table is the symbol of big feasts — and big ideas. Whether you place it in the dining room or workspace, it should be as important as the action that happens around it.

We’ve chosen to bring you the Coast Table for not just its clean, modern appeal but also for its thoughtful craftsmanship. Made from high quality solid white oak, it’s truly built to last. And make an impression.

The same can be said for its perfect accomplices, the Juniper Chairs & Stools. Each piece, finished in tung oil and capturing the eye with simplistic lines, harkens to the American modernism of the Southwest. However, the way in which it was made dates back much farther.

Techniques as Old as Time
Both the stools and chairs are made using traditional Chinese joinery techniques, a fading yet honored artform that’s been around for centuries. It employs the use of intricate, interwoven joints to create furniture without nails or screws. Instead the pieces “lock” into place, kind of like a puzzle.

One big benefit of that is that most of the furniture comes fully assembled. All is efficiently packaged to lower risk of damage during shipping. The appearance is also special. In the table, you can see the surface joinery detail through the gentle white-washed finish.

The same artisans that craft our Wing Nude Stand and Rise Nude Bookstand make the table, chairs and stools. They’re based in Guangzhou, China, and some are part of families that have passed these distinctive joinery skills along for generations.

A Charming Show of Character
The chairs and stools have full-grain vegetable tanned leather seats, which develop a beautiful patina over time. This gives each piece its own personality reflective of the unique rhythm of your home.

Vegetable tan is, in fact, a bit of a misnomer. It means the leather has been tanned with bark tannin (extracts) in an environmentally friendly way, versus with toxic chemicals. It’s a long process but results in the most pronounced and attractive patinas.

Freedom to Switch Up Your Scheme
No matter where you put these pieces you can feel good about its adaptability. Swap chairs in and out, and pull up a stool when you need it (put a planter on the stool when it’s not in use!). The pieces are truly versatile — equally useful and eye-catching in the workspace, kitchen or dining room.

The allure of this type of modern design is the freedom it affords you to express yourself and continually adapt your space to your needs and whims. All while knowing that while your home may change, these pieces will last and last.
