Behind The Scenes – Spring/Summer Catalog Shoot

It’s hard to believe that another photo shoot has come and gone! This one was especially fun. Maybe it was because we were shooting on Valentines Day, or because it was Robert’s birthday, or because our little buddy, Dignan, was a natural in front of the camera, or because Jena + Joe were amazing hosts and made us a Valentine’s/Birthday cake for lunch. Whatever the case may have been, we had our stand-up team in place and our new product prepped for the lime light. Thanks to Francois Robert, Jane Gittings Robert, Bruce Bever, Wendy Petrosky, Jena+Joe of Penelopes, plus our lovely friend, Lyra Jakabhazy, who took all these fantastic behind-the-scenes photos.

Our catalog is on press as we speak. Look for it in your mailboxes at the end of April. If you’re not on our list, sign up for one here!

Susan Dwyer of Up In The Air Somewhere

Susan Dwyer of Up In The Air Somewhere, is one of our favorites. A local designer who creates elegant ceramics inspired by the positive and negative spaces around her. After graduating from the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied sculpture, Dwyer focused primarily on ceramics and papier-mâché vessels inspired by the clean, minimal lines found in industrial architecture. These took off without a hitch and got attention from the likes of The New York Times, Design Sponge, Food+Wine, Real Simple and Chicago Social, just to name a few.

Last year, our production assistant, Sarah, stumbled upon Dwyer’s newest work at a pop-up design market called Big Big City: Chicago.  She loved them so much and thought Unison’s owner and designer, Robert, would love them too. Good thing it was his birthday the following week. We got him a Cutaway vase and the rest is history! Not to take all the credit, Robert had seen her work before and already owned a vase. Now we are thrilled to carry Up In The Air ceramics in the Studio+Store and unisonhome.com!

Working With Great People

Catalog shoots are fun, but they are even more fun when you get to shoot in fantastic spaces inhabited by fantastic people.

This fall we had the pleasure of working with Art Jackson and Chelsea Kalberloh Jackson, chef/owners of Pleasant House Bakery, who live in a retrofitted condo building in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. We shot in their sleek white and stainless steel kitchen (which made the cover of our winter catalog), and set up a bed in their light-filled living room (product and images to be seen in the spring)! We are huge fans of this lovely couple who work hard to run a fantastic savory pie business, taking after Art’s English roots. Their cute dog, Porkchop, also wanted to be in some of the photos… we shall see if he makes the cut!

Then there is the wonderful Angela Finney-Hoffman from Post 27, whose interior design and styling skills are much coveted. Her creativity never stops, especially in her very own home, where she styled our newest line of hand-printed metallic table linens and our upcoming Stitch bedding (available Spring 2013), creating a sophisticated loft-living series that we love! Here are a few sneak peaks. We are thrilled with the turnout of the Winter 2012 catalog and remain ever thankful to everyone involved!

Though we look rather serious in these images, we had lots of laughs on set with Francois Robert, Jane Gittings Robert, Angela Finney-Hoffman, Bruce Bever, and Wendy Petrosky. Thanks for everyone’s hard work! (Photos by Lyra Jakabhazy)

CUSTOM3 Event

Our Custom Cubed event was the perfect mix of design and craft all rolled up into one cozy night! The creators of our amazing one-of-a-kind reupholstered, revived and rejuvenated furniture were all there, answering your questions about the many layers involved in each piece, and some creative customers brought their own ideas as well for discussion. Hand made pretzels, mustard and cheese were also served, compliments of Mess Hall &Co.

Stop by the Studio+Store in the next couple weeks to view the collection before we turn it over to our winter launch!

The chairs have sold, but the sofa is still available ($2000). All pieces were refinished by Furniture Revival and upholstered Eli Wyn Upholstery.

Two original Knoll club chairs reupholstered (and looking classy) in our Sailor fabric. Still available at the Studio+Store.

Unison Fabrics for Upholstery at CUSTOM3

Tonight is our collaborative event, Custom Cubed, featuring vintage furniture pieces restored by Unison, Eli Wynn Upholstery, and Furniture Revival. This is the first time we’ve utilized our fabrics primarily for re-upholstery. On view are restored pieces by Jens Risom, Knoll and a few other unknown 70’s designers. We also have a selection of unique cubed ottomans for sale. We worked with photographer, Debbie Carlos, to document the process and will have some of her photographs on view.

All of our fabrics are hand-printed on the East Coast on sailcloth or slub duck. These two qualities prove to be excellent for upholstery, holding up to commercial coatings like flame and stain retardant. Our fabrics have been used for commercial projects throughout the U.S. and now we’d like to offer them directly to our customers.

Our studio is located in Chicago, where we design, execute, inspect, and store our fabrics. We convert the fabric into pillows, table linens, aprons, oven mitts and more. Our sewer is in the neighborhood, thus communication about quality is face to face and on a regular basis. Our bedding? We design that here too, but it is printed and sewn in Portugal. Here are a few behind-the-scene photographs of our inspection process.

Play Date

We all had a blast at our Kids Event, Play Date, this past Saturday. It was screen printing galore with A Muse, cupcake tasting (bubble gum, chocolate or sprinkles!) with Sweet Cakes Bakery and hours of creative play with the beautifully designed eco-friendly houses from Grow Studio. We met a bunch of our fans and hope our new customers are enjoying their bedding and custom pillows!
